Hello and welcome to the first weekly Fish Fact Friday. I’m Fishman aka Nicolas Logan and if you didn’t know I AM OBSESSED WITH FISH! This first week’s fish is the Coelacanth (see-luh-kanth). The Coelacanth is one of the last remaining fish that have bony fins, when most other fish have ray fins. This is due to how old the species truly is, there have been fossils found dating back over 400 million years ago! It was actually thought extinct for a time when, in 1938 a few days before Christmas, a museum in South Africa got a call for Captain Hendrick Goosen about an unusual fish. The rest is history! They are currently critically endangered only having 200-600 left, and only living off the coast of two small volcanic islands between Madagascar and Mozambique. Also, they live at a depth of 100-500 meters. This is why they call the coelacanth a living fossil.
